The buzz about The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
